The Unexpected

I remember it well.  The story of us.  The beginning.  He wasn't who I would have chosen.  Not because he wasn't amazing and wonderful and charming, but because the circumstances weren't in our favor.  The complications, the difficulties, the challenges, and most of all, the circumstantial impossibilities.  It would never work.  I told myself that a thousand times when the feelings were undeniable and the heart connection was unavoidable.  But the whisper of love between us wouldn't be hushed and the music between his heart and mine would never be silent.  The force was too powerful and the spiritual bond too intense.  It had to be God.  Yet, I questioned still.  I pleaded for answers and cited James 1:5 a multitude of times.  I wanted it to be right.  Holy and wholly approved of by the God who fashioned us both, and what I came to learn throughout my time in prayer was this..sometimes the unexpected is the divinely perfected.  Appointed, sanctified, and anointed.  Trust it.

You can't help who you fall in love with.  The circumstances may never be right, but if the God of the universe is backing it, nothing can stop it (Isaiah 14:27).  We are told in Romans 8:31 that "if God be for us, then no one can be against us," so if He is the author and potter of your heart's desires, then the armies of heaven will guard and protect you on your journey.  The snippet from above was shared with me by a close friend who agreed to let me use her story of unforseen love as a basis for my own teaching.  Her narrative with the man she now calls the love of her life, soul mate, and spiritual twin is one of candescent passion and deeply abiding love.  I listen to her speak of the bond between them and I'm emotionally touched just knowing that kind of godly connection is possible (Matthew 19:26).  I've never seen her happier and it brings joy to my heart to watch her light up at the mention of her beloved's name (Song of Solomon 6:3).  Perhaps the most exquisite component of her journey with this man, at least to me, is the element of surprise.  The unexpected blessing of a partner handpicked by God Himself caught her so completely off guard that she scarcely believed it was hers.  "I never saw him coming," she once told me, and her words brought to mind my own "unexpected" blessings from God.

Isaiah 30:18 says "the Lord longs to be gracious to you," and in Matthew 7:11, we're told that "if you, who are evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give to those who ask Him!"  We're all too familiar with unexpected trials - the cancer diagnosis.  The untimely death of a loved one.  A global pandemic.  The list goes on, but how often do we meditate on those unexpected blessings rained down from heaven?  The good stuff that lights up our heart and puts a smile on our face.  The long-anticipated wait for a baby is actualized in the positive pregnancy test, the unsought job promotion is offered, a surprise gift from a loved one arrives, the love of your life walks through the door, completely catching you off guard, but sealing your heart forever.  I encourage you today to be on the lookout for the unexpected blessing and favor of God.  In the wake of COVID-19, enough fear, hardship, and negative energy forces surround us that we begin searching for the next bad  thing to happen, but today, look up.  Seek God (Matthew 6:33) and expectantly receive the goodness and mercy He offers.  Change your perspective and fix your eyes, not on what is seen (2 Corinthians 4:18), lest it lead to fear, but on what is unseen, because His invisible attributes can be clearly perceived (Romans 1:20) for the seeking heart.  Allow yourself to be surprised by the God who loves you most and receive the unexpected from Him because when it flows from His hand, it is divinely selected and perfected.

"Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows."  - James 1:17
